The Power Of Beliefs And Their Impact

Although beliefs are vital to our being, few people think deeply about the power of beliefs. Can you recall when you last questioned yourself about what your beliefs are and how you see yourself as a person? It is highly likely it was some time ago because most people take themselves for granted. Before we even consider a personal development course, it is essential our beliefs are confronted head on because we need to understand the power of beliefs and the impact they can have on our lives.

A belief is something specific to a persons feeling of conviction. The power of beliefs is so important that their direct impact can influence our behaviour and character. Beliefs can be divided into positive and negative groups. Positive beliefs are responsible for positive acts such as goal and target setting. Negative beliefs cause negative acts such as self paranoia. Different traits in people activate different beliefs. For negative beliefs, the major contributor is the inner critic.

Life coaches generally refer to the inner critic as the voice inside our head sometimes letting us know that we aren’t very good. In small doses, the inner critic can actually be important but if the balance is not quite right, it can be quite detrimental. Building yourself up takes hard work, belief and effort but you dont want it all instantly wiped away by an inner critic that is not kept in check.

However, we do have our inner coach – the voice we hear of confidence, positive self belief and encouragement that gives us hope and leads us to our successful gateway. Your personal inner coach is that part of you checking for solutions rather than problems and responsible for providing inspiration and vitality. If you want to be successful then it is obvious you must listen to your inner coach.

It is for you to decide which one of the voices in your mind is the loudest. Are you your own coach or your own worst enemy? Ordinary people find it much easier to criticise, and their inner critic will be more dominant than their inner coach. Extraordinary people however, have that extra bit more and have an inner coach that is more finely tuned.

By developing ones inner coach your mind is working for you. If you stop and think just how incredible our brain is, you will realise it has more power than the combined power of the worlds computers. The brain has unlimited potential and we should use it to our advantage. Take the opportunity to be extraordinary and stop sitting in the doldrums and using the excuse of not being able to channel the latent power of your mind. The power of beliefs can have a phenomenal effect.

Detrimental beliefs can cause the mind to waste large amounts of energy. You should however remember a belief isn’t a genuine fact and consequently what negative beliefs you have about yourself today are not necessarily true. The power of beliefs is further illustrated by recalling the crazy beliefs that have been written over the years that are responsible for the development of whole cultures believing that the world was flat and gods live in the sky. Without exploring yourself, the chances are you hold beliefs about yourself that are detrimental and unhelpful. But from where do these beliefs come?

Some beliefs tend to originate from childhood. Opinions of elders do affect our self image during childhood. A lot of time is spent by therapists, trying to unravel negative self images people have in their early years. How amazing is it that we never really leave our childhood behind. Instead, it is embedded deep down in the core of our self being. Change and development are part of life, but without having the awareness of what makes us the people we are, the chance we have to control this change diminishes as a result of not understanding the power of positve self belief.

Several reasons exist for the importance of a positive mind-set or positive thinking. Positive thinking has been proven to greatly improve performance in quality and production. If we feel positive and good about ourselves then our creativity and performance is so much better. Confidence levels can skyrocket when one feels feel on top of  their game which can considerably enhance your life on a personal and working level. Challenging yourself regularly and sustaining your self appraisal honestly with reasoning, ensures positive thinking benefits are huge.

Negative thinking caused by fear has the effects of slowing us down; it stops positive thinking and stops us from being productive. We are held back from being active in making decisions due to fear of embarrassment, or feeling we are wrong in what we are saying. Negative thinking also clouds our judgement which adversely brings timidity in situations. That is why positive thinking is extremely important.

Our definition of opportunity suddenly becomes a challenge that is impossible to meet and we tend to stand still when the world is still moving on. Anxiety, anger, jealousy, fear, sadness and regret are all negative emotions with the capability of having powerful, unwanted physical effects as well as impacting your personal conduct in life.  Negative emotions cause negative reasoning which can instil habits of making limited decisions, but these emotions can be overcome by positive thinking.

Personal development is beneficial due to the encouragement of growth of our positive healthy characteristics and our negative ones to dwindle away. We feel so much better about ourselves from the inside which improves our outward persona, so giving us a much more positive demeanour. These processes of emotions, values, attitudes, motivations and beliefs are all connected, whether they be positive or negative.

We would not need any motivation in life if it was a stroll in the park. By regularly challenging ourselves and setting goals like learning a foreign language or spending time on a new hobby, you will develop disciplined mental strength of the highest order which will help you in lifes numerous areas. Positive thinking brings lifes rewards. The secret of success in the long term is to maintain your motivation and self confidence.  However, success in the long term is achieved via short term goals!  By setting much smaller targets and achieving all of them, then you will regularly reward yourself.

Always think positive thoughts in your mind. Positive thinking means – think well and you feel well. People with low self belief in themselves who become successful are in the minority. By taking positive steps and deciding to take positive control your mind and life should make you feel proud.

Think positive about yourself. Positive thinking can switch your self-talk from being negative to a positive state in your self-encouragement. You must give yourself personal consideration similar to that given to a treasured friend. Learn how to stop being your worst critic and become your personal cheer leader. Banish the negative thoughts you have and then concentrate on building up a plan of action.

The solid foundation of your positive state of mind will be formed from this plan via positive thinking. Progress further by giving yourself extra motivation as the planner could include reward days. Break down your routine into a set of goals for the short term that can be accomplished and you will experience more fun as you go. However, only by being open and truthful to yourself will this work. Never lie in your journal otherwise you are lying to yourself and your goals will be meaningless.

Customise your plan so it is more personalised to you and your requirements. The resulting effects are you will prove to yourself you can take complete control of your lifes destiny. By having a clear and defined structure to aid you and positively focussing on what is required you’ll never lose sight of your aims in life…all this thanks to positive thinking !

Using positive thinking and reasoning you will overcome the negative feelings of submissiveness and helplessness that can be experienced by people who are not in total control of any situation.

Ways to Develop Your Mental Toughness

Depending on how mentally equipped you are to deal with setbacks, will ultimately determine your general mental health. Even the most hardened people have, at one time or another, suffered from a mental collapse. Do not feel dis-heartened if you feel that you find it difficult to cope with the way the world is. You are not alone, many others have the same problem. What you need to do is develop your mental toughness.

Due to the sensitive nature of being human, there are many ways we can develop stress and depression. Sadly, there is still a lot of stigma surrounding issues around mental health. If we fall ill with a physical disease, we are a lot more open to telling others. But, feeling down is often seen by the individual as a sign of personal weakness. If you fall into this latter category, please take these feelings seriously.

The question is, What is it that gives us mental strength or mental toughness ? Well, some of it seems to be genetic. It has been well documented that mental health has been partially attributed to hereditary factors. Experience is also very important when it comes to mental strength. It is a proven fact that if we are happy with our current lifestyle, we also feel more confident in who we are. If you feel that you need to build up your mental toughness, there are a number of possible things you can do.

Firstly, you should consider talking to people who can help you when you encounter problems. Too many times, people bottle up their emotions from others. Try not to do this! Sometimes what we need is a friend who can be there for you. If you develop low feelings that become overwhelming, you should speak to a doctor or other professionals.

Secondly, when things get on top of you, a reality check is needed every now and again. You need to think whether you are taking too much on your plate and over burdening yourself. You must try to focus on your priorities. People resort to a self defeating strategy where they are tempted to take on more and more things to forget about feeling low. Be smart in the choosing of extra activities you take on; for instance, consider taking up a sport or hobby that builds up your emotional strength.

There is one word you should always remember when it comes to mental toughness, and that is balance. Balance means that you have a sense that all the important parts of your life are working together in total harmony. Each individual has a different concept of balance. This is because we all lead individual lives with different needs. Your sense of balance may change at different stages of your life. You may work longer hours than most, but if it gives you the financial rewards you crave and the time to do them , then you are likely to feel stable and balanced. However, when we are feeling off balance the slightest thing can tip us over the edge. Off balance can cause us to become overwhelmed and stop us from making clear decisions. The secret to balance is to remain in control of yourself and your goals and keep moving forwards.

You will find that your sense of balance will change along with your life priorities. As a young adult,  you may find balance through your social life. Later on in life, other things such as job security may become more important. Once you reach the middle of your life, you may have become financially secure and want to rediscover yourself again. Taking some time out regularly to consider where you are and where you come from is very important. Think carefully about what is important to you in respect of balance and stability.

We make many assumptions about what we ‘need’ to be happy in life. Some of this is because of intimate social pressures such as family, friends, and wider social pressures such as the mass media. The truth is only you know what is best for you. Learn to trust your instincts more and listen to your inner voice.

Think hard about whether there is too much going on in your life at the moment. Are your family suffering because you have taken too much on at work? Ask yourself what you would be doing in an ideal world? Then try to implement a strategy that allows you to get as close to it as possible.

Never underestimate the importance of balance in your life.  Getting the balance right via mental toughness will improve your quality of life beyond your wildest dreams. Remember to seek help when it is necessary,  but don’t lose sight of the responsibility you owe to yourself.
